Chasing Waterfalls in Alabama: Kinlock Falls

Getting to Kinlock Falls is an adventure in itself. Nestled deep within the sprawling Bankhead National Forest, this waterfall and accompanying plunge pool requires a short hike, making it accessible to outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. Located near the town of Double Springs, it’s a well-kept secret that deserves to be shared.

The hike to Kinlock Falls is a relatively short and easy trek (0.2 mile out and back), making it perfect for families, solo travelers, and nature enthusiasts alike. The trail winds its way down through the lush forest, through the serene Sipsey Wilderness Area, which surrounds the falls. There is a partially marked trail leading down to the falls, but you are easily able to follow a social trail that has been made by the many visitors over the years.

As you approach the falls, the sound of rushing water grows louder, hinting at the natural wonder awaiting you. Suddenly, the forest gives way to a breathtaking sight—the cascading Kinlock Falls. With a height of around 15 feet, this waterfall may not be the tallest, but its beauty lies in its serene setting and the cool refreshing pool below.

The pool at the base of Kinlock Falls is always cold, which is especially inviting on a hot Alabama day. Whether you’re in the mood for a refreshing swim or simply want to dip your feet in the cool waters, there is something for everyone. Surrounded by towering rock walls and even a rope inviting you to try and climb the falls, it is inviting and fun for everyone. Be warned, the falls are extremely slippery!

Kinlock Falls is also an excellent spot for a float. While we were at the falls, we saw many families and children in inner tubes. It’s the perfect area to take in the soothing sounds of the waterfall surrounded by the forest.

Bankhead National Forest

While Kinlock Falls is undoubtedly the highlight, Bankhead National Forest has more to offer. Some other nearby sights include Turkey Creek Falls and Natural Bridge. The Sipsey Wilderness Area is often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls.” Just make sure the waterfalls you’re visiting are accessible and on public land, as this was an issue we ran into a couple times.

Kinlock Falls in Bankhead National Forest is a testament to Alabama’s natural beauty. Its tranquil setting, accessibility, and opportunities for outdoor enjoyment make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the region. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a connection with nature, Kinlock Falls delivers on all fronts.

So, pack your Chaco’s, grab your camera, and immerse yourself in the wonder of Kinlock Falls. It’s a journey worth taking, a hidden oasis waiting to be discovered in the heart of Alabama’s wilderness, and a refreshing place to plunge on a hot summer day.
